We had a few hours to kill after breakfast before our car was to take us to the airport. We went for a final walk through the town of Salzburg and especially to their famous Christmas shop which sells decorations all year round. It was quite an experience with intricately carved and designed decorations. They also had thousands of eggs that had been hollowed out and decorated. I had previously seen this done with Ostrich eggs but never with little hen eggs and the effort would have been massive.

Salzburg airport is tiny, almost as small as some of the regional airports in Australia, and we had a 90 minute wait till our plane was meant to depart. We sat in the departure lounge and had our packed lunch while we watched the world go by. We needed to catch 2 flights – the first to Frankfurt and then onto Brussels. Travelling through Europe is such a breeze as there are no passport or border controls and you just breeze from one gate to the next. We finally arrived in Brussels and were greeted with references to Tintin all around.

Our hotel is right in the city next to the Grand Place and after checking in we decided to go for a walk. England are currently playing Congo and there was a crowd at every pub along the way. We stopped at a Belgian restaurant for dinner and after some confusion (mainly caused by me) with the waiter we were seated. We got a selection of meals and I made sure to try their local brew. Brussels is one of the places that Bron has visited numerous times for her ICU conference so she took us to a waffle shop for dessert. Thomas ordered the one piled with the most amount of cream and chocolate sauce and then couldn’t found it too big to finish.
