Pioneering Women

The resort we are staying at is right next door to a golf range and the kids spent an hour this morning collecting golf balls that had gone astray. When they came to the room excited with what they had found, I thought it would have been a handful. How wrong was I, they had connected over a 100 balls and laid them all out on the pathway

We started the day with a trip to the Women’s Museum at the Old Gaol. The museum showcased the achievements of pioneering women and the changes they had brought to the world. I was surprised to learn that as late as the 60s, women in Australia were expected to quit their job once they got married. There was an exquisite signature quilt that had been hand made with the achievements and signatures of 342 Australian women who were ‘first’ in their field.

The museum is housed in the Old Alice Springs Gaol which was in use to the 80s. We got to visit the cells where prisoners were held, and in most instances, locked up for 18 hours a day. The rooms were different colors as they moved the prisoners around for a “change in scenery”.

Some of the carvings and paintings on the walls of the cells have been preserved. They range from the depressing, where prisoners were counting the numbers of days they were locked in, to the inspiring, with incredible paintings.

Emily had been looking forward to visiting Emily’s Gap and so we took a drive out there this afternoon. Emily’s Gap is alongside Jessica’s Gap which are about 7 kms apart. Emily’s Gap looked idyllic with clear blue skies and cascading rock structures. There was also some rock art at both locations however we were only able to get up one set.
