We departed from Rovaniemi to spend the next couple of nights in Kakslautanen. We seem to have increased the amount of luggage we have, and including the warm clothes we rented we had a luggage cart full.
The bus trip to Kakslautanen was through some incredibly scenic parts of Finland. It was all covered in snow and the trees and frozen lakes looked spectacular.
After a 3 hour bus ride we arrived at our resort, and while it is only 3.30 in the afternoon it was pitch dark. The check in experience was sub par at best. After pulling all our luggage through snow to reception, we were told that we were in the wrong section. We were in the East section and our igloo was in the West section. After waiting for 15 minutes for a shuttle and then going on a 10 minute trip we finally arrived in the West reception. After getting to the front of the line, we were told that we are staying at the special Kelo igloos and need to check-in at the Kelo check-in, which is another 10 minute shuttle ride away. By now we had been trying to check in for almost an hour and the kids were getting antsy. Rather than waiting for the shuttle I went ahead on foot to check in. Finally Bron and the kids arrived and we made it to our lodge.
The room looked incredible and was an entire log cabin. The boys had bunk beds made of timber while Emily had her own double bed. The master bedroom was in an igloo with a glass roof. We could lie in bed and look at the stars. We were, however, surprised by how bright the resort was. Luckily our cabin was right at the end and there wasn’t much light pollution.
