Nobel Peace Center

Given we were only spending one day in Oslo, we didn’t have any specific tours organised. I really wanted to see the Nobel Peace Center, which was only a short walk away. After a lazy breakfast we headed out around 11.30 and the temperature was still below 0.

The museum is located near the waterfront and everything was frozen solid. The walkways near were very icy as well and fortunately the kids had decided to wear their snow boots today.

The museum was incredibly beautiful and serene and very well set up. They had a special exhibition for the Nobel Peace Prize for 1935 which apparently is one of history’s most controversial. Awarding the prize to the German journalist, editor and pacifist Carl von Ossietzky would become known as one of the committee’s most important – and most justified – decisions. They had the story of Carl’s life and how the decision was made and it’s impact. There are a lot of similarities in Carl’s situation and Edward Snowden.

Upstairs they had a display on the current recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Following on there was a room with numerous iPad screens on stands, one for each recipient of the award. You could then click through and read about them as well as hear them talk. It was beautifully done and probably one of the best museum displays I have ever seen.
